One of the best weeks of the school year to build school spirit and foster connections within the student body is fast approaching. Homecoming will take place on the week of September 30 to October 4. The theme this year is Surfers vs. Bikers: A Teen Beach Movie Homecoming. From the movie screen to North Polk Community School District, the Teen Beach Movie Homecoming will be a sure way to unite students over a beloved childhood movie and hopefully help encourage students to participate in all of the homecoming activities North Polk has to offer. This article will be a rundown of all the information homecoming related for the 24-25 school year.
Dress-Up Days
Dress-up days are a time-honored tradition that works to build anticipation for the big game on Friday, Oct. 4. The dress-up days this year are as follows:
Monday is the class color day where students will have a chance to bond with their grade in their matching attire. Seniors will be wearing white, juniors will wear blue, sophomores have pink and freshmen will dress in green.
On Tuesday students will “dress as their grade,” meaning the different classes will dress “their age” within the high school. Seniors will pose as senior citizens, juniors will dress middle-aged (think: barbeque dad and soccer mom), sophomores will dress as kids or teenagers (think: Justice and the classic highlighter fits all the boys rocked in middle school), and freshmen will dress up as babies/toddlers.
Wednesday acts as the theme day for dress-up days and students will have a choice to dress as either a surfer or a biker which aligns with the plot of Teen Beach Movies surfer vs. biker rivalry.
Thursday will serve as both North Polk Has My Back day and anything but a backpack. Be sure to adorn the t-shirt with a unique swap for a backpack. The few rules regarding what a student’s anything but a backpack may be- it cannot be alive and you have to be able to carry it around all day (there will be no elevator access due to the item).
As tradition, Friday will be spirit day and students will wear Comet colors in preparation for the big game that evening.
Coronation/Pride Night
On Thursday, October 3, the coronation will take place starting at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium to honor the Homecoming court couples from each grade and to announce the winners for Homecoming King and Queen with Prince and Princess. Following the coronation ceremony, pride night will take place outside around 7:30 p.m. and will offer food for all attendees.
Parade
The parade will take place on Homecoming Day and will be attended by each school within the district and any community members who would like to view it. The parade will feature sports, clubs and our beloved mascot Cosmo. Parade set-up begins at 12:15 p.m. and the parade begins at 1:15 p.m. Shortly after the parade students will walk to the football field to begin the pep rally.
Pep Rally
At approximately 2 p.m. the pep rally will start and will feature a performance by the dance team, cheers led by both the high school and middle school cheer team and inflatable Olympics. These Olympics will have a teacher representing each school from the district participating in a series of timed challenges to see which teacher can complete the obstacle course the fastest.
The Dance
In the 2024 Homecoming game, North Polk will be playing Ballard at 7 p.m. After the game around 10: p.m. the Homecoming dance doors will open and students can pay for admission and dance the night away in the high school commons.
