Having a strong bond with one’s mom is important, especially when a parent is the coach. Maddy Fetters and Michelle Fetters are a mom and daughter duo for the North Polk High School volleyball team. Mrs. Fetters, one of the North Polk High School volleyball coaches and Maddy Fetters, a North Polk High School volleyball player, show their chemistry both in and out of practice
Volleyball is such an exciting sport, especially for North Polk. North Polk has amazing volleyball teams, with an overall of 13-11, conference 4-4, the IA rank of 100 and such great coaches. Volleyball is a good sport to have support in, especially from family. It’s even better to have support from your coach when they are your mom.
Maddy stated “my mom wants me to do my best.” Of course Mrs. Fetters wants her to do it because she is not just her coach but she is also her parent and makes it her goal to show her kids full support in whatever they do.
Maddy and Mrs. Fetters are so close and have such a good friendship even when it comes to sports. Sports can build people closer together which is why there can be so many positives to having your mom or any family member as a coach.
On the other hand pressure during sports is also very common. Maddy said “I have quite a lot of pressure on me to be good.” Which can also be seen as a point where she just wants her mom to see her as someone who is good at what they do and someone who can be coachable.
When having a parent as a coach people may think it comes with favoritism, but with Michelle Fetters and Mady that is not the case.
Mrs. Fetters stated that “when we are in practice or a game, I am the coach not the parent. We set boundaries so it is not confusing. As soon as practice is over, we are onto the next thing as a family.” During practice they are a coach and player but outside of practice there’s a strong mom and daughter duo.
It’s so great to keep separate family life out of practice and games because it gives everyone an equal opportunity.
It can also be great to have a child or teenager as your kid because as a couch they can help you through challenges. Mrs. Fetters expressed “Maddy helps me see things from a student/teen perspective.”
