Giving Back
Annual Student Council Food Drive
November 16, 2021
The North Polk Student Council leads a food drive before Thanksgiving Break every year.
This year the food drive began on Monday, Nov. 15 and will end on Tuesday, Nov. 23. The donation area will be located in front of the counselors office in the high school. There will be tables and boxes where students can drop off their goods.
This year, the donations will be going to local food pantries. The student council will be dropping off all collected food to the Comet Cupboard and the Blessing Box.
For both food pantries, some needed items they are looking for include: dry soup mixes, Spaghetti-O’s, mac-n-cheese, canned tuna or spam, peanut butter, canned vegetables or fruit, paper, and personal products such as toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, and chapstick.
The reasoning behind having the food drive before thanksgiving is to be able to “help others in our community be able to gather for meals with their families,” stated Elizabeth Huether, student council advisor.
In previous years, the food drive was typically held on the two days of the week before Thanksgiving break. However, a lot of students did not know the food drive was happening and led to very small donations from a few students. That’s why, this year to hopefully increase donations like last year, the time to drop off food was extended to the whole week before break as well.
