A dollar for a hat may seem like a simple way to earn some extra money, especially with the intrigue from teenagers, but for the Vernon family, it means relief from hospital costs.

As you may remember from an article written in December, English teacher Susan Vernon’s family has recently been shadowed with medical issues. Vernon’s son-in-law, Alex, has recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which will require in-patient care.

To help with the heavy costs that come with long hospital stays, the high school decided to host a fundraiser. Instead of a traditional fundraiser, the school decided to involve the students is a fun way. On Wednesday, Jan. 26, students will be able to donate $1 and get the privilege to wear a hat in the school for the day. Teachers will also get the opportunity to donate $5 and wear jeans for the day.

*Update: North Polk High School raised $628 for the Vernon family.
