Choir and band students are extending their musical knowledge to the art of jazz. Over the winter, band and choir kids are offered the opportunity to gain extra knowledge and practice for their musical skills.

Grace Smithey joined jazz band and choir “To have an extension on learning and repertoire in music skills and performing.”

Jazz band and choir musicians are extremely dedicated to their craft seeing that their practices often occur early in the morning. Practices are every other Monday at nine a.m and Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 a.m.

Keelie Maas, who plays trombone 2 in the jazz band explains how most jazz band practices work: “Sometimes we have sectionals to get in a smaller group and work on rhythms and notes as a group. Most of the time we are all together and Mr.Weeks tells us to play a section. He helps us learn by making us repeat a section over and over.”

The jazz band recently had a competition in December and will have another one in February.
